Air Cavity Ship Design
The aim of the installation of an air cavity on the ship bottom is to improve the vessel hydrodynamic characteristics by a reduction of frictional resistance. This concept was already applied to river barges and tankers due to their typical hull forms with a huge portion of flat bottom.
This study consider the application of air cavity concept to a big container carrier that is based on decades of KSRI theoretical and experimental studies.
In order to have a sufficient bottom flat surface for air cavity installation, the "typical" container hull form has been completely revised and a new hull concept has been introduced by Navalprogetti.
