Full Scale Trials in Ice 2010

Agip KCO, operating in the Kazakhstan sector of the North Caspian Sea, is the Owner of the Ice Breaking Emergency Evacuation Vessel IBEEV fleet. These vessels are designed to evacuate personnel from offshore oil installations in emergency situations and in a hydrocarbon/toxic environment. The vessels are designed for navigation in ice.

A three years research project has been initiated on 2007, involving Navalprogetti S.r.l. Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Trieste (Italy), and Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute Federal State Unitary Enterprise St. Petersburg (Russian Federation).

Navalprogetti S.r.l. has been contracted by Agip KCO in order to test the Ice Going Capability and Structural Response of Ice Breaking Emergency Evacuation Vessel (IBEEV) in level and deformed ice.

The test was carried out during February 2010.

The purpose of IBEEV Full Scale trial in ice is to investigate the following themes:

  1. ice going capability of the vessel;
  2. global structural response;
  3. bow structural response during ice breaking process;
  4. stern structural response during ice milling;
  5. propeller strength limits for ice navigation;
  6. propulsor operational limitation for ice navigation;
  7. vibration analysis.

The activity has been developed in collaboration with the following departments of Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute:

  1. Ice Tank Department, Kirill E. Sazonov, Head of Ice Tank;
  2. Ship and Offshore Structures Department, Valery M. Shaposhnikov, Head of Department;
  3. Icebreaker Design Department, Valery A. Belyashov, Chief Designer.

After the two days of trials in ice in February 2010, the gathered data have been post-processed, ordered and verified.

The following third parties have been involved in the Trials:

  1. The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics of Trieste (OGS), Trieste - Italy;
  2. Schottel Research & Development Department, Spay - Germany;
  3. Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) University of Trieste, Trieste – Italy;
  4. Department of Naval Architecture (DINMA) University of Trieste, Trieste – Italy.
